Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA

Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA, a part of Harpoon Brewing’s Leviathan Series, poured a transparent dark amber color into the glass, topped with a lumpy white head.  The nose carried though a nice balance of hops and malt, with citrus, caramel, and light alcohol heat covering any yeast notes.

Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA opened crisp and hoppy, but quickly overwhelmed the palette with the alcohol.  There was a grainy aspect to the ale that seemed out of place with the medium body, and the hops left a slightly oily mouth feel.  Most notable, however, was the extreme lack of hops in the actual tasting, with the sweet malt and alcohol taking control.
