Verhaughe Echt Kriekenbier Flemish Cherry Ale, a regular offering from Brouwerij Verhaeghe, poured a brilliant red into the glass that was almost crystal clear, topped with a short lived pink head. Musty old fruit and leather led the nose, followed by funky yeast and woody notes.
Verhaeghe Echt Kriekenbier opened with sour pie cherries and earthy, dusty oak flavors over a light body. Definite lactic notes were detectable in the middle of the ale, and the sourness tightened up the ale and balanced the slightly stewed character the cherry flavor took on. The ale ended with a long, cherry finish.
