Weihenstephaner Korbinian Doppelbock

Weihenstephaner Korbinian Doppelbock, from the Weihenstephaner Brewery, settled an almost impenetrable black with red highlights into the glass with a parchment white head that was both short lived and sticky. Light coffee and butter dominated the nose with some sweet undertones.

Weihenstephaner Korbinian Doppelbock opened with a thick and slightly flat creamy start; incredibly smooth.  Mild sweetness with ample earthy and chocolate notes almost came through, along with a spicy gingerbread undertone that defined the beer.  Oddly enough, the doppelbock didn’t really change its flavor profile even during the long fade.

Doppelbocks are a style I’m still learning, but I have to say Weihenstephaner Korbinian Doppelbock seemed a little thicker and maltier than most I’ve tried.  Good, but better served as a dessert beer than something to drink on a warm summer day.  On a tasting side note, this doppelbock paired incredibly well with moderately buttered popcorn… it tasted like the best kettle corn I have ever eaten.
