Redhook Winterhook Winter Ale poured a chestnut hue in the glass. It had little head and a nose of toasted oats and pineapple.
The first impression Winterhook made upon drinking was a light grapefruit flavor with a touch of sweetness and some spice. Considering the dark color, I was surprised how little the malt came through in the flavor profile. Winterhook ended on a pleasant, subdued grapefruit rind linger.
Winterhook is a surprisingly subtle ale for a winter seasonal... and is a better beer for it. While it lacks the punch and warmth I look for in a winter ale, it seems like a perfect spring beer, with enough flavor and booze to keep me happy as the sun peaks through the clouds.
