Southern Tier 2XIPA Double India Pale Ale

Southern Tier 2XIPA Double IPA, a recent offering from Southern Tier Brewing, poured a transparent homey into the glass, with a soapy white head supported by mild carbonation.  The nose was surprisingly malt-centric, with sweet caramelized sugar and notes of fruity pear and orange.

Southern Tier 2XIPA started sweet and creamy before mellowing into a thick, dark orange and sweet vanilla malt middle.  As the ale faded, even more creaminess came through, cut by a perceivable amount of alcohol heat.

Southern Tier 2XIPA doesn’t quite hit the high points of their barrel-aged double IPA, and it shows its heat a bit more than it should relative to the ABV.  However, 2XIPA is still a worthy representation of what a big IPA can be.
