Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout

Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout, by Great Divide Brewing Company, poured an impregnable thick black into the glass, topped with a long lasting orange-brown head.  The nose had mocha, coffee, and chocolate notes.


Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout opened with a sweet, milk chocolate start that was offset by a rising heat as the stout settles in.  All in all a nice, if boozy, stout that isn't as gnarly and gripping as many offerings without ever feeling unnatural.  

Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout

Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout, an oaked version of Great Divide’s Yeti Imperial Stout with chocolate added in the barrel, poured a thick, syrupy black with a reddish brown tint into the glass and was topped by a huge, cocoa powder head.  The nose completely validated the “chocolate” and “oak” in the name, with cocoa leading and a hint of roastiness in the background. 

Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti opened with dry chocolate, wood, and a peppery alcohol heat that gripped the tongue and was almost tannic.  The chocolate sweetened as the roasted malts emerged, a welcome introduction that contrasted a strange escalation in the heat.  Yeti stayed thick, chewy, and sweet during an extended fade, detectable even minutes after the last drink.

Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout is far from subtle, and is an intense (but enjoyable) drinking experience.  The alcohol seemed strangely dominant in this Stout, with something exacerbating the heat, so sip, don’t gulp.
